Sphaerobolus, commonly referred to as the "artillery fungus" or "shotgun fungus," is a genus of saprophytic basidiomycetes. While primarily a soil-dwelling decomposer, it is widely recognized in agriculture and landscaping for its unique ability to forcibly eject its spore-containing masses, known as glebae, toward light sources or specific surfaces.

The fungus is not a true plant pathogen that feeds on live host tissues; however, its presence is highly detrimental to the aesthetic and commercial quality of plants. By launching its sticky, black spore masses onto the surfaces of leaves, stems, and fruits, it causes permanent spotting that can obscure photosynthesis and reduce the marketability of ornamental plants and garden crops.

The primary symptom is the appearance of tiny, hard, circular black dots that adhere firmly to plant surfaces. These spots are highly resistant to removal and often mimic symptoms of common fungal diseases like leaf spot or bacterial blights. Growers frequently mistake these sporocarps for fungal infections, leading to the unnecessary and ineffective application of various chemical fungicides.

Development is driven by the presence of organic debris, particularly wood-based mulch, which serves as a breeding ground. The fungus thrives in moist, shaded environments with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Once established, the fungus uses hydraulic pressure to "shoot" its spores up to several meters, making it a persistent issue in residential and commercial landscapes.

Effective management requires focusing on cultural control methods rather than chemical interventions. Key steps include:

  • Replacing wood or bark mulch with inorganic alternatives such as stone, gravel, or landscape fabric.
  • Improving site aeration to reduce moisture accumulation.
  • Removing existing contaminated organic debris promptly.
  • Ensuring proper drainage to prevent water stagnation in the mulch layer.
Fungicides are generally ineffective against Sphaerobolus because they do not address the saprophytic nature of the fungus thriving in the underlying mulch.
