Description

The Sphaerophoraceae family consists of lichens that are sometimes mistakenly identified as plant pathogens due to their epiphytic nature. It is essential to clarify that from an agronomic perspective, these organisms are not plant diseases; they do not parasitize crop tissues but instead use tree bark strictly as a substrate for attachment.

These lichens do not act as infectious agents. Sphaerophoraceae belong to the group of ascomycete fungi that live in symbiosis with algae. Their thallus is typically fruticose or branched, often featuring characteristic spherical structures at the tips of the branches, inside which spores develop for reproduction.

Under natural conditions, these lichens most commonly inhabit older trees in forest ecosystems with high air humidity. They prefer the bark of coniferous and deciduous species where stable microclimatic conditions prevail. In managed orchards, they are rare and typically appear only in cases of dense planting or poor air circulation.

Symptoms of lichen presence on tree bark are often confused with plant diseases, yet they do not cause necrosis or rot. On the contrary, the presence of large lichen colonies often serves as a bioindicator of air quality, as these organisms are highly sensitive to environmental pollution, particularly sulfur dioxide and other industrial emissions.

Preventive measures in the orchard include proper pruning to improve aeration and the removal of old, dead branches. If the appearance of the tree is compromised by heavy lichen growth, mechanical cleaning of the bark can be performed using stiff brushes, provided that the living cambium tissues are not damaged. Additionally, white-washing of trunks in early spring is an effective way to manage their spread.
