This pathogen thrives by colonizing the bark and cambial layers of its host, disrupting the transport of nutrients and water, which eventually leads to the necrotic degradation of the affected plant tissues.

The causal agent belongs to the class of Ascomycetes. The disease is characterized as a fungal necrotrophic infection, meaning the pathogen kills host tissue to obtain nutrients. As the mycelium spreads, it disrupts the vascular system, leading to systemic weakness and susceptibility to other secondary pests and pathogens.

A wide range of crops and ornamental plants can be susceptible, especially in orchards and forest environments. The disease is most prevalent in plants that have suffered previous trauma, such as frost cracks, sunscald, or pruning wounds. These physical breaches provide a direct entry point for the fungal spores to establish colonies and expand their range within the host plant.
