Mistletoe sphæropsis, caused by the fungus Sphaeropsis visci, is a specialized fungal disease that specifically attacks the European mistletoe (Viscum album). This organism functions as a hyperparasite, meaning it parasitizes the parasite itself, effectively limiting the mistletoe's ability to thrive on its host trees.
The fungus colonizes the tissues of mistletoe, including its stems and leaves. By invading these organs, Sphaeropsis visci disrupts the normal physiological processes of the mistletoe, leading to necrotic lesions and eventual death of the affected plant parts, thereby reducing the burden on the infested host tree.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as dark or blackish patches on the mistletoe greenery. Over time, these areas become necrotic and brittle. The fungus produces pycnidia — small, flask-shaped structures — within the diseased tissue, which serve as the primary source of conidia for further spread throughout the tree canopy.
Fungal proliferation is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain and wind facilitate the dispersal of spores from diseased mistletoe to neighboring healthy clusters. Once established, the fungus can significantly degrade the structural integrity of the mistletoe clump.
From an agricultural and forestry perspective, Sphaeropsis visci is viewed as a beneficial biocontrol agent rather than a pathogen to be eliminated. It plays a crucial role in regulating mistletoe populations in natural ecosystems and managed orchards, helping to maintain tree health without the need for human intervention or chemical fungicides.
