The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Sphaerulina abeliceae. This pathogen is a host-specific parasite that primarily targets trees of the genus Zelkova. Its biological life cycle involves both sexual and asexual stages, allowing it to adapt effectively to the host plant's seasonal development and survive harsh environmental conditions.
The primary hosts for this fungal pathogen are species within the Zelkova genus, such as Zelkova serrata. These trees are highly valued in landscape architecture and bonsai cultivation, making the damage caused by the fungus both a biological and economic concern, as it directly impacts the plant's aesthetic value and physiological health.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as irregular leaf spots. Initially, these spots appear as small chlorotic or light-colored lesions. As the fungus progresses and produces fruiting bodies, the spots turn brown or dark gray, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo.
