Sphaerulina leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Sphaerulina rehmiana. This pathogen predominantly targets the foliage of grapevine plants, disrupting photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant vigor. It is recognized as a specific type of leaf spot disease that can affect the productivity of commercial and ornamental vineyards.
The primary hosts for this fungus are plants within the Vitis genus. The infection cycle usually begins on older leaves, but under favorable conditions, it can spread to younger shoots and petioles. Such colonization stresses the vine, often leading to reduced nutrient storage and poor winter hardiness in affected plant tissues.
Symptoms are characterized by the development of necrotic lesions on leaf blades. These spots are often irregular in shape and possess a distinct dark boundary.
