Description
The fungus Sphaerulina rhabdoclinis (formerly Rhabdocline pseudotsugae) is the causal agent of the Rhabdocline needle cast. This pathogenic fungus primarily targets Douglas-fir trees, causing significant damage to foliage and severely impacting the health of both nursery stock and established forest stands.
The primary host for this disease is the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). The pathogen is highly host-specific, and its impact is most severe in regions with high humidity and frequent rainfall, where it can cause extensive premature needle drop, leading to stunted growth and reduction of the tree's photosynthetic capacity.
The initial symptoms are characterized by yellowish-brown spots or bands that appear on the needles. As the infection progresses, the spots expand and turn reddish-brown. By spring, small fruiting bodies called apothecia rupture the surface of the infected needles, releasing spores that are easily spread by wind and rain splashes.
The development of the disease is strictly linked to environmental conditions. Spore dispersal and subsequent infection of new needles occur during cool, wet spring weather. Because the spores germinate on young, developing needles, the timing of prophylactic treatments is critical for effective management of the disease in plantation settings.
Management strategies focus on preventing the buildup of inoculum within the stand. Silvicultural practices such as thinning are essential to improve air circulation and reduce humidity levels within the canopy. In nurseries, regular application of fungicides and the removal of infected debris are necessary to keep the infection rate below critical thresholds.
