Sphenospora is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the order Pucciniales. This pathogen causes various rust diseases primarily affecting tropical and ornamental plants, with a significant impact on species within the orchid family. As an obligate parasite, this fungus penetrates the host tissues and utilizes specialized structures called haustoria to extract nutrients, which leads to metabolic stress in the plant.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Orchidaceae family, particularly genera such as Catasetum, Clowesia, and Mormodes. In commercial greenhouses or private orchid collections, Sphenospora can spread rapidly if conditions are favorable, causing significant damage to the plant's aesthetic value, reducing photosynthetic efficiency, and leading to overall decline.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as the appearance of small, raised pustules on the leaf surfaces, which often display a rusty, reddish-brown, or yellowish coloration. These pustules represent the fruiting bodies of the fungus. As the infection progresses, the surrounding leaf tissue begins to yellow and dehydrate, eventually leading to necrotic lesions, premature leaf drop, and exhaustion of the plant.

The development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on the microclimate. High relative humidity and poor air circulation are critical factors that facilitate spore germination and infection. The pathogen is disseminated primarily through water splashes during irrigation, as well as via airborne currents, which easily transport the fungal urediniospores to healthy plant tissues.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to mitigate the spread of Sphenospora. Recommended measures include:

  • Immediate isolation of symptomatic plants from the healthy collection.
  • Optimizing the microclimate by reducing humidity and enhancing air ventilation.
  • Sanitary pruning and destruction of heavily infected foliage to reduce the inoculum load.
  • Application of systemic fungicides containing triazoles or strobilurins to inhibit mycelial growth.
  • Rigorous disinfection of gardening tools to prevent mechanical transmission of spores.
