Sphenospora kevorkianii is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for orchid rust, a significant disease affecting various orchid species. This fungus belongs to the order Pucciniales and is known to cause severe localized tissue damage, significantly compromising the physiological health of the plant.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes orchids from the subtribe Catasetinae, such as Catasetum, Clowesia, and Cycnoches. As a biotrophic parasite, the fungus establishes itself within the host's tissues, diverting energy resources and hindering the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and store reserves.

Initial symptoms are often subtle, presenting as small, chlorotic or light-colored spots on the undersides of leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots develop into characteristic orange or reddish-brown powdery pustules, which represent the spore-producing structures of the fungus. If left untreated, the leaves become necrotic and drop prematurely.

The development and spread of Sphenospora kevorkianii are heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly high humidity levels and moderate temperatures. The spores are easily dispersed by wind, splashing water from irrigation, or contact with contaminated tools, making it a persistent issue in high-density orchid collections.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Growers should prioritize improving airflow, reducing foliage wetness during watering, and isolating infected plants immediately. If the infection is widespread, the application of appropriate fungicides, such as those containing copper or triazoles, is recommended to inhibit spore germination and prevent further spread throughout the collection.
