Description
Sphinctrina is a genus of fungi categorized as mycophilous organisms, specifically those that thrive by parasitizing lichen thalli. While not a conventional agricultural pathogen affecting crops, it is a significant biological agent studied in the context of forest and orchard biodiversity and the health of epiphytic plant communities.
The causal agents belong to the family Sphinctrinaceae. These fungi are obligate parasites that penetrate the reproductive structures or the vegetative body of the host lichen. By extracting nutrients directly from the lichen’s tissues, the fungus disrupts the symbiotic balance between the algal and fungal components of the host, eventually weakening it.
Host organisms typically include lichens such as those from the genera Pertusaria or Lecanora, which often colonize the bark of fruit and forest trees. Unlike typical crop diseases, Sphinctrina does not target the trees themselves, but it significantly alters the lichen communities present on the surface of the bark.
The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of tiny, black, stalked fruit bodies known as perithecia, which are visible to the naked eye or under a magnifying lens. These structures protrude from the lichen thallus, leading to the discoloration, structural degradation, and eventual necrosis of the host lichen patch.
The development of Sphinctrina is favored by high humidity and shaded environments, common in mature orchards and forests. Spores are dispersed through wind and moisture. Since Sphinctrina does not threaten the physiological health of trees or agricultural yields, no chemical or physical control measures are necessary or recommended in agricultural practice.
