The family Sphinctrinaceae consists of specialized fungi known as lichenicolous fungi, which grow in association with lichens. Unlike pathogens that affect agricultural crops, these fungi operate within a complex symbiotic or parasitic relationship exclusively with lichen species, making them irrelevant to traditional plant pathology and crop management.

The causative agent of the lichen colonization is a fungus from the order Caliciales. These organisms utilize the lichen thallus as their primary substrate, absorbing nutrients from the host. Because they do not possess the enzymatic capability to infect or parasitize vascular plants, they are classified as non-pathogenic to crops and trees.

The symptoms of colonization by Sphinctrinaceae appear as small, often stalked or sessile, black fruiting bodies on the surface of the lichen. These structures, known as apothecia, are the key diagnostic feature for mycologists identifying these fungi in nature. The health of the lichen host might gradually decline, but this process remains confined to the lichen population.

The development of these fungi depends heavily on the presence of suitable host lichens and specific environmental conditions, such as consistent humidity and air purity. They do not require specific agricultural conditions to survive, nor do they spread to cultivated fields. Their dispersal occurs primarily through spores carried by wind, which colonize mature lichen colonies.

There are no protective measures required for these fungi, as they do not pose any economic threat to agriculture. No chemical or biological controls are implemented against them because they do not affect crop yield, plant health, or soil quality. Their existence is strictly a matter of ecological interest, contributing to the biodiversity of natural ecosystems.
