The spiral nematode (Helicotylenchus spp.) is a significant genus of plant-parasitic nematodes found in various soil types worldwide. These pests are classified as migratory semi-endoparasites, meaning they inhabit the rhizosphere and feed on root cells, causing localized damage that severely impacts the host plant's vigor.

These nematodes possess a broad host range, damaging various crops such as vegetables, turfgrass, and ornamental plants. A critical host for Helicotylenchus is the banana plant. In banana cultivation, these nematodes attack the root system, weakening the anchorage of the plant and leading to stunted growth, reduced bunch size, and overall economic decline.

Symptoms of infestation are often observed as general chlorosis, nutrient deficiencies, and wilting during periods of high demand for water. Below ground, the roots may show brownish lesions, tissue necrosis, and a reduced number of feeder roots. This damage limits the plant's ability to uptake water and minerals from the soil effectively.

Environmental factors such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures are highly conducive to the population growth of these nematodes. They propagate effectively in sandy and loam soils. Because they can survive for extended periods on weed hosts or in the soil without a primary crop, they remain a persistent challenge in agricultural systems.
