Description
Sporendonema is a genus of fungi that can act as a pathogen causing significant post-harvest losses and tissue degradation in various agricultural products. These fungi are characterized by their ability to thrive on organic matter, often appearing as distinct, brightly colored spore masses on the surface of infected plant parts. In professional agriculture, they are recognized as indicators of improper storage conditions.
The host range is diverse, primarily including harvested fruits, vegetables, and seeds stored in humid environments. They are also known to colonize wooden surfaces, packing materials, and organic debris in damp greenhouses. While often saprotrophic, these fungi can aggressively attack host tissues if they are already stressed, bruised, or damaged during harvesting.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a dense, velvet-like coating on the surface of the plant tissue. Depending on the specific fungal species, these mats of mycelium and spores can appear white, pink, orange, or deep red. As the infection progresses, the underlying tissue softens and decays, leading to a breakdown of cell walls and total loss of product quality.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the spread of Sporendonema. High humidity levels, lack of air circulation, and stable, moderate temperatures (approx. 18–25°C) create the perfect environment for rapid spore production and dispersal. Airborne conidia can travel long distances, settling on new hosts and germinating whenever moisture becomes available on the surface.
Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Key measures include:
- Thorough sanitation of storage facilities and harvesting equipment to eliminate inoculum sources.
- Controlled Atmosphere Storage (CAS) or high-efficiency ventilation to keep surface moisture below critical levels.
- Careful handling during harvest to minimize wounds that serve as entry points for the pathogen.
- Periodic inspection of stored produce to identify and remove early signs of infection.
