Description
Sporidesmiosis is a group of fungal diseases caused by pathogens belonging to the Sporidesmiaceae family. These fungi typically act as opportunistic pathogens that invade plant tissues during periods of environmental stress or mechanical damage, compromising the overall health of the host plant.
The disease affects a wide variety of agricultural crops, ranging from cereals and legumes to fruit-bearing trees. Both juvenile and mature plants can be infected, with the pathogen often targeting leaves, stems, and reproductive organs, which significantly reduces the vigor of the affected plants.
Visible symptoms include the development of dark, velvet-like fungal mats and necrotic lesions on the surface of plant parts. As the infection progresses, these areas expand, leading to chlorosis, tissue decay, and structural weakness, which can eventually result in total crop failure if left unchecked.
The primary drivers of the disease outbreak are high humidity levels and stagnant air, which promote rapid spore dispersal and germination. The pathogen thrives in warm conditions, making greenhouses and humid climate zones particularly vulnerable to rapid spread within a crop population.
Economic damage is caused by reduced biomass production and loss of harvest quality. Effective protection strategies include the use of resistant crop varieties, crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle, and the precise application of preventive fungicides to inhibit the spread of fungal spores in the field.
