Black sporidesmium (Sporidesmium atrum) is a fungal pathogen known to cause necrotic lesions in various agricultural and horticultural crops. While often found living on decaying organic matter, this fungus can act as an opportunistic parasite, especially when the host plant is stressed by environmental factors, pests, or nutritional deficiencies.
The host range of this pathogen includes various grasses, cereal crops, and forage plants. In many cases, it attacks the roots and lower stems of seedlings, which can lead to significant crop thinning. Its ability to thrive on plant debris makes it a persistent threat in fields where sanitation practices are not strictly followed.
