Description
Sporisorium is a genus of basidiomycete fungi within the order Ustilaginales, responsible for various types of smut diseases in plants. These pathogens are characterized by their ability to replace plant reproductive tissues with masses of dark, powdery teliospores, significantly impacting the productivity of affected cereal crops worldwide.
The primary hosts for Sporisorium include various species of sorghum, maize, and wild grasses. The fungus typically infects the host plant during the seedling stage or at the flowering phase. Once the infection is established, the mycelium grows systemically within the plant, eventually manifesting in the reproductive structures.
Key symptoms include the transformation of floral parts into smut sori. These sori are initially covered by a thin membrane, which eventually ruptures to release millions of microscopic spores into the environment. These spores can then be wind-dispersed or carried by agricultural machinery to neighboring fields, serving as a primary inoculum source.
Environmental conditions such as moderate temperatures (20–25°C) and soil moisture levels during sowing are critical for the successful germination of teliospores and the subsequent infection of susceptible seedlings. The spores can remain dormant and viable in the soil for several years, making the pathogen difficult to eradicate once it is established in the field.
Management of Sporisorium requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Essential measures include the use of certified disease-free seeds, chemical seed treatment with systemic fungicides, deep plowing to bury spores, and rotating crops to break the disease cycle. Selecting resistant cultivars remains the most effective and sustainable long-term solution.
