This pathogen is known for causing significant systemic infections in various grass species, effectively transforming the plant's floral tissues into masses of fungal spores, which hinders natural reproduction and seed production.
The primary hosts for this fungus include species within the Trachypogon genus and other associated Poaceae members. The infection process is often cryptic, beginning in the early stages of plant development when the fungus penetrates the seedling or the apical meristem, silently colonizing the host tissues as it matures.
Symptoms of the disease become apparent during the reproductive phase of the plant. Instead of forming normal spikelets or panicles, the host develops distorted, darkened sori. These structures contain a dense powder of teliospores that eventually erupt, facilitating the release and dispersal of the fungus to surrounding vegetation and soil surfaces.
