Sporormia fimetaria is a species of ascomycetous fungus commonly classified as a coprophilous organism. While it primarily thrives on herbivore dung, its occurrence in agricultural systems often serves as a warning sign of poor sanitation practices involving organic matter, which can subsequently impact crop health.
The disease is caused by fungal spores that exhibit high environmental resistance. In the context of agronomy, these spores migrate from raw organic fertilizers into the root zone of plants. When the plant tissue is already stressed or compromised by environmental conditions, the fungus can shift from a saprotrophic to a weak pathogenic state.
The plants most at risk include vegetable seedlings and greenhouse-grown crops. Symptoms of infection manifest as restricted plant growth, localized browning of the collar, and the appearance of fungal mycelium near the base of the stem where it contacts the soil or contaminated mulch.
The development and spread of this fungus are heavily dependent on high moisture levels and the presence of decomposing organic matter. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C are ideal for the rapid maturation of spores. The pathogen is typically introduced into the field through inadequately composted manure or contaminated potting soil mixtures.

- Managing irrigation to prevent prolonged saturation of the soil surface.
- Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce relative humidity.
