The disease known as Stagonospora leaf spot is caused by the fungal pathogen Stagonospora neglecta. This fungus specifically targets flax plants, causing significant stress to both fiber flax and linseed varieties throughout the growing season, particularly in regions with high humidity.

The primary signs of infection include the development of small, irregular light brown to yellowish spots on the foliage. As the disease progresses, these spots may enlarge and coalesce, eventually killing the leaf tissue. A characteristic feature is the appearance of dark, pinpoint-sized pycnidia, which are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, clearly visible within the necrotic zones.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Stagonospora neglecta. The fungus thrives in warm temperatures between 18°C and 22°C, coupled with high humidity or frequent rainfall, which facilitates the dispersal of conidia via splashing water or wind. Crop residues and infected seeds serve as the primary sources of initial inoculum for the new season.

The economic impact of the disease is significant due to the reduction of photosynthetic area, which leads to stunted growth and reduced seed yield. For fiber flax producers, the infection is particularly damaging as it degrades the quality and strength of the bast fibers, causing them to become brittle and less valuable in industrial processing.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize infection pressure. Essential practices include the implementation of long-term crop rotation, the use of certified, disease-free seed, and the application of chemical fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to disease development.
