The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Stagonosporopsis oculi-hominis, which is a known pathogen affecting various horticultural crops. It primarily attacks the plant tissue through enzymatic activity, leading to necrotic lesions. The fungus is categorized as an ascomycete and is highly adapted to humid environments.

The disease primarily impacts cucurbits, including cucumbers, squash, and melons, although it can also manifest in other related vegetable species. Infection can occur at any growth stage, starting from seedling development up to the fruit maturity stage, which can significantly affect the commercial quality of the produce.

Typical symptoms involve the emergence of spots on foliage and stems, which often exhibit concentric rings. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, leading to leaf blight and stem lesions. In highly humid conditions, small fruiting bodies known as pycnidia appear on the surface of the lesions, indicating active sporulation.

The spread of Stagonosporopsis oculi-hominis is heavily dependent on moisture. High relative humidity and warm temperatures (20–25°C) are critical for spore germination and infection. Rain splash, irrigation water, and contaminated gardening tools serve as the primary vehicles for spreading the pathogen across a field or greenhouse.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this fungal disease. This includes strict sanitation practices, such as removing crop residues, ensuring adequate ventilation to reduce humidity levels, and maintaining proper plant spacing.
