Description

Steccherinum is a genus of basidiomycete fungi recognized as a causative agent of white rot in various woody plants. These fungi are primarily saprotrophic but can act as opportunistic pathogens, colonizing the heartwood and sapwood of weakened or damaged trees. By decomposing lignin, they significantly compromise the structural integrity of the host plant, often leading to internal decay.

The primary hosts for this fungal complex include deciduous species such as apples, pears, maples, and oaks. The infection usually gains entry through wounds caused by improper pruning, frost cracks, or animal damage. Once inside, the mycelium spreads throughout the vascular system and wood tissues, gradually depleting the tree's resources and reducing its overall physiological stability.

Visual identification of the disease relies on the presence of the fungus's fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. These structures are often leathery or corky, characterized by a hydnoid (spiny) hymenophore on the underside. Internal symptoms include a bleaching of the wood, which becomes fibrous and stringy. Over time, the tree may exhibit canopy thinning, reduced fruit yield, and eventual failure of limbs or the main trunk.

Fungal development and spread are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing water, settling on any open wounds where they can germinate. Orchards with poor airflow, high plant density, and neglect of basic sanitation are significantly more prone to rapid spread of Steccherinum throughout the plantation.

Management of the disease focuses on strict sanitation and preventive maintenance. Removing diseased wood and ensuring that cuts are clean and protected with wound sealants are critical first steps. Additionally, maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management helps the host build better defenses against fungal colonization. Growers should prioritize the sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination between trees.
