Description
The fungus Stemphylium callistephi is the causal agent of Stemphylium leaf spot, a significant disease affecting Asteraceae, particularly the China aster. This pathogen functions as a necrotrophic parasite, invading leaf tissues and causing localized cell death that eventually expands across the foliage.
Symptoms typically begin as small, circular or irregular spots that are initially yellow or light brown. As the infection progresses, these spots turn dark brown or grey, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In high humidity, the center of the spot develops a fuzzy appearance due to the production of conidia, which are the primary reproductive structures of the fungus.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. Prolonged periods of leaf wetness, high relative humidity, and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are ideal for the germination and penetration of spores. The pathogen survives between seasons in infected plant debris, soil, and potentially in or on seed surfaces.
The economic impact of this disease is primarily seen in the significant loss of aesthetic value in ornamental plants, as well as reduced plant vigor. Severe infections can lead to heavy defoliation, stunted growth, and in sensitive aster varieties, a substantial decrease in flower quality and seed production, often rendering the crop unsalable.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Sanitation is paramount: removing and destroying infected plant debris reduces inoculum levels for the next season. Implementing wider plant spacing improves air circulation, which helps keep leaves dry. Chemical control through regular application of broad-spectrum fungicides can also be highly effective when initiated at the first signs of disease.
