Description
Stemphylium leaf spot, caused by the fungus Stemphylium drummondii, is a significant plant disease that affects both agricultural crops and ornamental plants. This pathogen acts as a necrotrophic parasite, causing tissue death and reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly negatively impacts plant health and crop yield.
This fungus primarily infects species such as onions, garlic, various legumes, and certain vegetable crops like tomatoes. It is known to thrive in various climatic zones, often becoming problematic in intensive agricultural systems where host crops are grown in close proximity or in consecutive rotations without adequate breaks.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, light-brown spots on leaves, which gradually enlarge and turn dark brown or grey. As the lesion matures, a dark, velvety mycelial mat often develops in the center, which serves as a diagnostic feature of Stemphylium infection. In severe cases, the infected leaves wilt, dry out, and drop prematurely.
The development of the disease is strictly linked to environmental conditions, specifically prolonged leaf wetness and humidity levels exceeding 85%. Warm temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are optimal for spore germination and colonization. The disease spreads rapidly via rain splashes, wind currents, and mechanical tools used during cultivation.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize fungal pressure.
- Implement a rigorous crop rotation plan to break the disease cycle.
- Ensure proper spacing to improve air circulation within the canopy.
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris at the end of the season.
- Apply preventative fungicide sprays during periods of high humidity to protect the foliage from primary and secondary infections.
