Description

The disease known as Stemphylium leaf spot is caused by the fungal pathogen Stemphylium loti. This fungus is a significant threat to various legume species, causing necrotic lesions on foliage and significantly reducing the photosynthetic capacity and vigor of the infected host plants.

The primary host for Stemphylium loti is the birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus). The fungus is known to survive in plant debris and soil, serving as a persistent inoculum source for subsequent growing seasons, particularly in areas where legume crops are cultivated repeatedly without proper rotation.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular, dark brown spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions may expand and coalesce, leading to severe leaf chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence. In severe cases, the entire plant canopy may appear blighted, resulting in significant yield losses.

The development and spread of Stemphylium loti are strongly favored by warm, humid conditions. Excessive rainfall or high humidity levels are essential for spore germination and infection. Dense canopies that lack sufficient airflow create a microclimate that accelerates the progression of the disease within the field.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation, selecting resistant varieties, and ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve aeration. Fungicide applications may be necessary during periods of high humidity to suppress fungal growth and protect the crop during its critical developmental stages.
