Stemphylium leaf spot is caused by the fungus Stemphylium solani, an ascomycete pathogen that primarily targets solanaceous plants. The fungus thrives in moist conditions, surviving as mycelium or conidia on infected debris, alternative weed hosts, or within the soil structure until environmental conditions favor its reactivation.

The disease frequently affects tomatoes, eggplants, and occasionally peppers and potatoes. In professional vegetable production, Stemphylium can become a significant issue, particularly in high-tunnel or greenhouse operations where humidity levels are often difficult to control, leading to rapid disease escalation within the crop canopy.

Symptoms typically begin as small, dark, circular spots on the lower, older leaves of the plant. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often becoming angular or irregular in shape, surrounded by a distinct yellow chlorotic halo. The centers of the lesions may eventually dry out and crack, giving the leaves a scorched appearance.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Frequent rainfall, overhead irrigation, or heavy dew provide the necessary surface moisture for conidia to germinate and penetrate the host tissue, leading to widespread secondary infections.
