Description

Stephanoma is a genus of fungi recognized in plant pathology primarily as a mycoparasite. These fungi specialize in parasitizing other fungal pathogens, often those that cause powdery mildew on various horticultural and agricultural crops. While they may seem beneficial by attacking other pests, their presence indicates a severe imbalance in the plant ecosystem and can itself harm host tissues.

The host range is broad, mainly affecting greenhouse crops, including vegetables like cucumbers and ornamental plants that are highly susceptible to powdery mildew. The pathogen colonizes the mycelium and conidiophores of its fungal host, effectively replacing or covering the primary infection, which often leads to a complex and aggressive disease manifestation on the leaf surfaces.

Visible symptoms include the development of a dense, greyish-white, or brownish fungal mat over the surface of the infected host. The leaf tissue underneath often exhibits chlorosis, followed by necrosis. As the disease progresses, the plant's photosynthetic capacity is severely compromised, leading to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and diminished yield quality.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Stephanoma include high humidity levels (usually above 80%) and stable, warm temperatures. Proper airflow and humidity management are the most critical environmental controls. The spores are primarily dispersed through wind currents, splashing water from irrigation systems, and physical contact with contaminated tools or clothing.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to dealing with this condition. Preventive measures include ensuring good greenhouse hygiene, removing heavily infested plant parts immediately, and keeping the canopy dry through strategic irrigation. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides, though priority should be given to managing the primary pathogen to prevent the growth of the mycoparasite.
