Stephanospora is a genus of hypogeous fungi belonging to the Stephanosporaceae family. These organisms are primarily recognized for their symbiotic role in forming mycorrhizal associations with the roots of various forest trees. However, under specific environmental conditions, these fungi may shift their role, potentially contributing to root decay and hindering the health of host plants in plantations and managed forests.
The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium colonizing the rhizosphere and cortical tissues of the roots. While typically beneficial, under conditions of ecological stress or nutrient imbalance, the fungus can exhibit pathogenic tendencies, leading to the classification of this infection as a root-associated mycological disorder. The pathogen disrupts the normal physiological functions of the root system, causing it to lose its protective and absorptive capacities.
Susceptible hosts predominantly include members of the Fagaceae and Pinaceae families, such as oaks and pines. Symptoms of an infestation often manifest above-ground as stunted growth, thinning of the canopy, and premature senescence of needles or foliage. The economic and ecological impact of this pathogen is primarily observed through the slow decline of tree health, which reduces stand productivity and timber quality. Chronic infection renders trees highly susceptible to drought, pests, and other secondary pathogens, often leading to mortality in vulnerable ecosystems. Prevention remains the most effective strategy, focusing on maintaining optimal soil health and nursery sanitation standards.
