Stereaceae is a family of basidiomycete fungi known for their role as wood-decay pathogens. These fungi are primarily responsible for various types of white rot, a disease process that involves the degradation of lignin and cellulose within the host plant. They function as both saprotrophs in nature and opportunistic parasites when they attack weakened or injured woody plants.
The host range for Stereaceae includes a wide variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. In agricultural settings, these fungi often target fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and stone fruits. Infection typically occurs through wounds, pruning cuts, frost cracks, or sites damaged by environmental stress or insect activity, where spores can germinate and penetrate the internal woody tissue.
Symptoms of Stereaceae infection include the presence of leathery, crust-like or shelf-like fruiting bodies appearing on the bark of the trunk or branches. Internally, the wood undergoes structural decay, becoming soft, bleached, and stringy as the fungus decomposes the plant matrix. Wind and splashing rain are primary vectors for spores, although human intervention—such as using contaminated pruning tools—also plays a significant role in spreading the infection within an orchard or plantation environment.
