Sticta leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the Sticta genus, characterized by the appearance of distinct necrotic spots on the foliage of various plants. This disease can affect ornamental trees, shrubs, and certain herbaceous plants, leading to a significant reduction in their photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor.
The causal agent is a fungus that survives the winter in infected plant debris, fallen leaves, or within the cracks of the bark. During periods of favorable weather, the fungal spores are dispersed by wind and rain splash, settling on susceptible host tissues and initiating new infection cycles during the growing season.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, rounded to irregular spots on the leaves. These spots often develop a dark brown or black center, frequently surrounded by a lighter-colored halo. As the infection progresses, tiny black structures called pycnidia appear in the center of the spots, which serve as the primary source of secondary infection.
