Description
Stictis is a genus of ascomycete fungi that are commonly associated with the decomposition of bark and woody tissues. While many species within this group are primarily saprotrophic, they are also recognized as opportunistic pathogens that can cause localized lesions, stem cankers, and necrotic damage in stressed or weakened plant hosts.
These fungi typically colonize a wide variety of woody plants and shrubs. They thrive in environments where bark integrity has been compromised, whether due to physical injury, environmental stress, or lack of proper pruning maintenance, making cultivated and wild trees susceptible to infection under poor growth conditions.
The primary visual symptom of a Stictis infection is the emergence of small, disc-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, erupting through the plant epidermis. These structures often display a pale, whitish or yellowish center with a distinct rim. Affected areas of the bark usually show discoloration, peeling, and eventual tissue necrosis.
Disease progression is heavily influenced by high moisture levels and stagnant air. Spores are disseminated primarily via rain splash and wind, settling on susceptible host tissues. Once a spore germinates, the mycelium penetrates the bark, utilizing existing wounds or lenticels to establish itself within the nutrient-rich cambium and phloem layers.
The economic impact of Stictis involves reduced plant vigor and the dieback of branches. If left unmanaged, the cumulative damage can lead to structural weakness in the affected tree or shrub, resulting in the premature death of smaller branches or the systemic decline of the entire host plant, which is particularly detrimental in nursery production.
- Implement strict sanitation practices by pruning and destroying infected branches.
- Apply fungicidal wound dressings immediately after performing any form of pruning.
