While primarily acting as a saprotroph by decomposing dead organic matter, it is frequently observed in close association with localized bark necrosis, suggesting that it can transition into a weak pathogen when the host tree is environmentally stressed or compromised.
The fungus is characterized by the presence of small, disc-shaped apothecia that are partially immersed in the host's bark. As these fruit bodies mature, they rupture the bark surface in a radial pattern, creating the characteristic star-like appearance that gives the species its name. These structures are the primary source of airborne spores responsible for the spread of the fungus within the canopy.
Host trees commonly affected by Stictis radiata include species such as birch, beech, willow, and hazel. In susceptible hosts, the fungus colonizes the cortex, potentially leading to the formation of small sunken lesions. While not typically lethal to a healthy, mature tree, repeated infection can lead to branch dieback and reduced vitality in ornamental or forest plantations.
