Stigmatomyces is a genus of microscopic fungi belonging to the order Laboulbeniales. These fungi are specialized entomopathogens that parasitize insects, primarily Diptera, rather than attacking plant tissues directly. In agricultural settings, they are observed on various insect species that frequent crop fields.

The life cycle of Stigmatomyces involves the attachment of spores to the cuticle of the host insect. The fungus then develops external structures called perithecia, which are visible to the naked eye under magnification. These fungi rely entirely on the host for nutrition and dispersal within the environment.

While Stigmatomyces does not cause typical plant rot or necrosis, its presence is significant in plant protection. By infecting insects, including pollinators and beneficial predatory flies, the fungus can indirectly disrupt the ecological balance required for healthy crop production.

The development of these fungi is heavily dependent on the density of the host insect population and environmental conditions such as high humidity. Stagnant air and crowded insect populations, common in greenhouse environments, facilitate the transmission of fungal spores between individuals.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) rather than direct chemical application. Maintaining good hygiene in greenhouses, ensuring proper air circulation, and monitoring insect populations help prevent the conditions that allow Stigmatomyces to thrive and adversely affect the beneficial insect community.
