Astragalus leaf spot

Stigmatula astragali is a fungal pathogen that specifically infects plants of the genus Astragalus. It is recognized as an agent of leaf spot disease, which can affect the photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor of the host plant. The infection process involves the invasion of leaf tissues, leading to cell death and the formation of characteristic lesion patterns.

The disease is caused by an ascomycete fungus. The life cycle involves the production of pycnidia, which act as fruiting bodies containing conidia. These reproductive structures serve as the primary inoculum for spreading the disease within a plant population. The fungus typically survives the winter in infected crop debris, which acts as a reservoir for subsequent infections.

The main symptoms include small, localized necrotic spots on the leaves. These spots are often characterized by brown to grey centers with darker margins. As the infection progresses, multiple spots can merge, causing leaf chlorosis and premature senescence of the foliage. Close observation of the leaves often reveals the minute, dark spots corresponding to the fungal pycnidia.

Environmental factors such as high relative humidity, moderate temperatures, and frequent rainfall are critical for the successful infection and transmission of Stigmatula astragali. Water splash from rain or overhead irrigation is a major mechanism for dispersing conidia from the infected debris onto healthy plant tissues, facilitating rapid spread during the growing season.

Management of this pathogen focuses on sanitation and preventive agricultural practices. Essential strategies include:
