Stigmina spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Stigmina dura. This fungus acts as a parasite on various deciduous trees and shrubs, attacking the leaves, shoots, and fruit tissues. The pathogen survives the winter in infected bark, buds, and fallen leaves, allowing it to re-emerge as a threat as soon as favorable conditions arise in the following spring.

The host range of this disease primarily includes species within the Prunus genus and other ornamental woody plants. The disease is most problematic in environments where humidity remains high for extended periods. It can cause significant stress to trees, particularly in young or poorly maintained orchards, leading to premature defoliation and diminished overall health of the plant.

The primary clinical signs of the disease are small, brownish spots on the foliage. As the infection progresses, the tissue within these spots becomes necrotic and drops away, resulting in the classic "shot-hole" appearance of the leaves. In severe cases, the twigs may exhibit small, oozing cankers, and fruit development can be negatively impacted, causing spotting and deformation of the epidermis.

The development and spread of Stigmina dura are heavily dependent on weather conditions. Periods of rain and moderate temperatures promote the production and dispersal of conidia. These spores are spread across the canopy by splashing rain droplets, wind, and potentially by insects, which can create entry points for the fungus through physical damage to the plant's surface.

Managing the disease requires an integrated strategy to reduce the inoculum level and prevent further spread. Consistent maintenance practices are crucial for the long-term health of the plants. Effective control measures involve:

  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris to eliminate overwintering sites.
  • Applying protective copper-based or systemic fungicides during critical growth stages.
  • Pruning to ensure adequate airflow within the tree canopy to reduce moisture.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and correct watering practices.
