The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Stigmina milletiae. It is a specialized parasitic fungus that affects various species of the Milletia genus. This pathogen is known for its ability to colonize the foliage of plants, leading to significant physiological damage if left unchecked in gardens or ornamental landscapes.
Symptoms appear primarily as distinct leaf spots. These spots are often dark-colored and necrotic, sometimes surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection develops, the spots may coalesce, leading to necrotic patches that disrupt the plant's ability to conduct photosynthesis. A dark, powdery fungal growth (conidiomata) often appears on the underside of the leaves, indicating the production of spores.
The development and spread of Stigmina milletiae are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splashes and wind play a crucial role in dispersing spores from infected leaf tissue to healthy foliage.
