Stilbella

Stilbella is a genus of fungi that acts as a plant pathogen, primarily causing tissue necrosis, bark decay, and various forms of rot. This fungus targets a wide range of woody plants, shrubs, and sometimes fruit-bearing crops, often becoming a significant issue in orchards and nurseries where humidity levels are difficult to manage.

The causative agent reproduces through conidia, which are produced on structures known as synnemata. These structures often manifest as distinct, brightly colored, club-shaped or stalked heads emerging from the surface of infected tissues. These reproductive units serve as the primary source for further spreading the infection throughout the plantation.

The typical symptoms of Stilbella infection involve localized browning or necrosis of the bark, wilting of young shoots, and the appearance of sunken lesions on fruit. As the disease progresses, the plant's vascular system may be compromised, leading to leaf drop, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the eventual death of the entire plant.

Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus frequently gains entry through wounds caused by improper pruning, insect damage, or environmental stressors like frost cracks. Stagnant air and poor hygiene in the garden create the perfect conditions for the rapid multiplication of the pathogen.

Controlling Stilbella requires a strict adherence to integrated pest management practices to reduce inoculum pressure. Effective measures include:

• Pruning and removing all infected branches to eliminate the source of spores.
• Applying protective wound sealants or fungicides to fresh pruning cuts.
• Ensuring proper plant spacing to facilitate airflow and reduce humidity in the canopy.
• Cleaning pruning tools with sanitizing solutions to prevent cross-contamination.
• Applying preventive copper-based sprays during the dormant season to minimize spore survival.
