Stilbella fimetaria is a significant fungal pathogen that primarily affects the commercial production of edible mushrooms, particularly Agaricus bisporus. Known as a competitor mold, this fungus thrives in composted substrates and casing layers, where it competes aggressively with the cultivated mycelium for nutrients and space.
The host range is largely confined to the substrates used in mushroom farming. Once established, the fungus impairs the vegetative growth of the host mycelium, leading to a decline in crop vitality. If left unmanaged, the infestation can lead to a complete failure of the flush, resulting in substantial economic losses for the grower.
Diagnostic symptoms are characterized by the emergence of white to salmon-colored pustules or stroma on the surface of the mushroom beds. These structures are the reproductive bodies of the fungus, producing masses of spores that are easily disseminated by air currents, water splashes, or physical contact with tools and machinery.
The development of this pathogen is favored by high humidity (often exceeding 90%) and stable temperatures common in mushroom growing rooms. Improper pasteurization of the compost or the introduction of contaminated casing material are the most frequent entry points for the pathogen into a clean environment.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for maintaining a healthy crop cycle. Growers should prioritize rigorous sanitation protocols, including the thorough cleaning and disinfection of rooms between cycles. Ensuring high-quality spawn and substrate preparation, along with maintaining optimal environmental conditions, significantly reduces the risk of Stilbella fimetaria outbreaks.
