Description

Streptomyces albireticuli is a soil-inhabiting actinomycete recognized as a causal agent of specific bacterial plant diseases known as streptomycosis. This pathogen primarily targets the root system and underground vegetative structures, interfering with nutrient uptake and causing systemic physiological stress in affected crops.

The host range of this pathogen includes various root crops like potatoes, sugar beets, and, in some cases, cereals and legumes. It is particularly problematic in greenhouses and intensive cultivation areas where soil conditions are frequently manipulated for rapid plant growth.

Diagnostic symptoms often involve the appearance of dry, necrotic lesions or scabs on the roots and tubers. As the infection progresses, the foliage shows signs of wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth. The destruction of the fine root hairs limits the plant's ability to cope with environmental stressors.

Development and spread of the disease are favored by well-aerated, slightly alkaline to neutral soils. Unlike many other bacterial pathogens, Streptomyces species thrive in conditions that allow for efficient mycelial growth through the soil matrix, especially when temperatures remain consistently between 20°C and 28°C.

Economic damage is substantial, as the quality and market value of the harvest decline sharply due to surface lesions. Effective management strategies rely heavily on preventative measures, including the introduction of suppressive soil amendments, crop rotation to break the pathogen lifecycle, and the application of bio-control agents to outcompete the pathogen in the rhizosphere.
