Description
Streptomyces europaeiscabiei is a pathogenic soil bacterium belonging to the actinomycetes group, recognized as a primary agent of common scab in potatoes. These bacteria reside primarily in the soil, surviving on decaying organic matter, and become pathogenic when they infect developing potato tubers under favorable conditions.
This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily targeting solanaceous crops. While potatoes are the most economically significant host, the bacteria can also cause scab-like lesions on carrots, sugar beets, and radishes. The infection cycle usually begins during the early stages of tuber initiation when the tuber skin is still permeable.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as corky lesions on the skin of the tubers. These lesions vary significantly in appearance, ranging from superficial scabs to deep, pitted craters. Although the internal flesh of the potato remains edible, the aesthetic damage severely reduces the market value and makes the tubers more susceptible to secondary infections.
Environmental factors are crucial for the development of Streptomyces europaeiscabiei. The pathogen thrives in warm, dry soils with a neutral or alkaline pH. Practices that raise soil pH, such as excessive liming or the application of fresh manure, significantly increase the risk of an outbreak by creating an optimal environment for the bacteria to colonize.
Management of common scab requires a multi-faceted approach. Key preventative measures include avoiding highly alkaline soils, maintaining adequate soil moisture during the tuberization period to inhibit bacterial growth, and practicing crop rotation with non-host crops. Furthermore, the selection of resistant cultivars remains one of the most effective long-term solutions for commercial growers.
