Description
Russet scab is a plant disease caused by the soil-borne bacterium Streptomyces reticuliscabiei. This pathogen belongs to the actinomycetes group and specifically targets the periderm of developing potato tubers, leading to characteristic surface lesions that diminish the commercial value of the crop.
The primary host for this pathogen is the potato (Solanum tuberosum). The bacterium is an opportunist that thrives in the soil environment, often surviving on decaying organic matter. It persists in agricultural soils for long periods, making it a persistent challenge in areas with frequent potato cultivation.
The main symptom of the infection is the development of a distinct, net-like pattern on the tuber skin. This appears as superficial cracking and suberized, russet-like patches. While the internal flesh of the potato usually remains unaffected, the damaged skin allows for increased moisture loss, leading to tuber shrinkage and vulnerability to secondary infections during storage.
The development of Streptomyces reticuliscabiei is heavily influenced by soil conditions. The pathogen flourishes in neutral to alkaline soils (pH 6.0–7.5), relatively high soil temperatures, and dry conditions during the critical early stages of tuber initiation. Excessive liming of the soil often exacerbates the severity of the infection.
Effective management and prevention of russet scab rely on an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant potato varieties and maintain soil pH at slightly acidic levels. Crop rotation using crops that increase soil acidity, along with the application of balanced irrigation during the tuber formation stage, significantly reduces the impact of this pathogen on the harvest.
