Common scab, often associated with species like Streptomyces violaceusniger, is a significant bacterial disease affecting root and tuber crops worldwide. These soil-borne actinomycetes are filamentous bacteria that persist in the environment by decomposing organic matter. Under specific soil conditions, they transition into pathogenic forms, colonizing the surfaces of growing tubers and roots.

The disease primarily targets potatoes, beets, radishes, and carrots. The infection is most problematic in intensive agricultural systems where host crops are grown frequently. The bacteria penetrate the host tissue through lenticels (natural gas-exchange pores) or wounds in the developing skin of the tuber, triggering a defense reaction that results in the formation of characteristic scab-like lesions.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as raised, pitted, or superficial corky lesions on the skin of tubers. These lesions range in appearance from small, shallow tan spots to deep, necrotic craters. While the internal flesh of the potato usually remains edible, the damage is severe enough to lower the quality, marketability, and storage shelf-life of the produce due to increased moisture loss.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. Streptomyces species thrive in warm, dry soils with a neutral or alkaline pH. In regions where soil pH is maintained above 6.5, the disease incidence is significantly higher. Soil moisture levels are also crucial; if the soil is dry during the critical tuber initiation stage, the risk of widespread infection increases drastically as the bacteria proliferate in the rhizosphere.

Managing this pathogen requires an integrated agricultural management strategy since chemical soil treatments are often ineffective or impractical. Growers are encouraged to implement the following practices:

  • Maintain soil pH slightly below 5.5 to create an environment hostile to the bacteria.
  • Practice crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce the pathogen population in the soil.
  • Ensure adequate soil moisture during the tuberization period to inhibit infection.
  • Use certified, disease-free seed tubers to prevent introducing the pathogen to new fields.
  • Apply green manure crops to increase the population of beneficial microbes that compete with Streptomyces.
