Strigula is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Pyrenulales, often existing as foliicolous lichenized fungi. In an agricultural context, this genus is significant because certain species colonize leaf surfaces, forming specific colonies that interfere with photosynthesis and can be mistaken for more aggressive parasitic pathogens.

The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Strigula. These are obligate epiphytes that rarely penetrate host plant tissues; however, their massive proliferation on the leaf surface disrupts gas exchange and light absorption, which significantly suppresses the plant's metabolic processes and overall vigor.

This genus typically affects evergreen plants in humid tropical and subtropical regions. Crops such as citrus, tea bushes, and various ornamental plants are particularly susceptible. Plants with dense, leathery leaves provide an ideal substrate for these fungi to establish and thrive.

Key symptoms include the appearance of flat, circular, or branched patches on the upper leaf surface. These spots may range in color from pale green to gray or dark brown. Unlike common necrotic spots, these formations often exhibit complex geometric patterns and are identifiable by their distinct thallus structure when viewed under magnification.
