The Strigulaceae family represents a group of ascomycetous fungi that frequently form crustose lichens on the surface of living leaves. In an agricultural setting, these fungi are recognized as epiphytic colonizers that can negatively affect the physiological processes of evergreen crops, particularly in humid climates.
The pathogen type is essentially lichenized fungi. These organisms form a symbiotic relationship with algal partners, developing protective thalli directly on the leaf cuticle. By masking the leaf surface, they interfere with light absorption, effectively reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the host plant and potentially stunting its growth.
Plants with thick, waxy, or leathery evergreen leaves, such as citrus trees, coffee plants, and various ornamental shrubs, are the most common hosts. The spread of Strigulaceae is driven by high environmental humidity, poor airflow, and shaded conditions within the plant canopy, which allow lichen colonies to thrive undisturbed.
Signs of infestation include the appearance of dark, circular, or irregular patches on the upper surface of leaves. Unlike necrosis, these are external structures. If left unmanaged, these colonies can spread to cover a significant portion of the foliage, leading to premature leaf senescence and a decline in overall tree vigor.
Effective management focuses on improving the plant's environment rather than eliminating the fungus through toxic chemicals. Key strategies include:
- Pruning to increase airflow and light penetration into the canopy.
- Maintaining proper plant spacing to reduce ambient moisture.
- Applying copper-based fungicides if infestations become severe to help clean the leaf surfaces.
- Managing irrigation systems to avoid wetting the foliage unnecessarily.
By optimizing the microclimate around the foliage, growers can create conditions that are highly unfavorable for the establishment and proliferation of Strigulaceae, ensuring the health and productivity of the plantation.
