Description
Stromatinia is a genus of pathogenic fungi responsible for severe rot diseases in various plants, most notably bulbous flowers and legumes. The most significant species, Stromatinia gladioli, causes dry rot, which is a major concern for commercial growers and home gardeners alike.
The disease is characterized by the production of sclerotia—hardened resting bodies of fungal mycelium. These sclerotia are highly resistant to environmental stressors, allowing the fungus to survive in the soil for extended periods even in the absence of a host crop, making it a persistent agricultural threat.
The infection primarily affects the subterranean parts of the plants, such as bulbs, corms, and root systems. Once established, the fungus impairs the vascular integrity of the host, preventing the uptake of water and essential nutrients, which leads to stunted development and eventual plant collapse.
Key symptoms include the yellowing of foliage starting from the tips, wilting during warmer parts of the day, and the appearance of necrotic, sunken lesions on the bulbs. Upon close inspection, the presence of dark, grain-like sclerotia on the decaying tissue confirms the diagnosis of a Stromatinia infection.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach focusing on prevention. Key strategies include practicing strict crop rotation, ensuring proper soil drainage, and selecting disease-free planting material. When chemical intervention is necessary, preventive applications of specific fungicides during the planting stage and early growth cycles are recommended to minimize pathogen spread.
