Stromatinia rapulum is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, known for causing a severe rot of rhizomes and bulbs in certain ornamental plants. It is primarily recognized as a significant threat to members of the Asparagaceae family, particularly the genus Polygonatum (Solomon's seal), where it causes systemic tissue degradation.
The life cycle of this pathogen is centered around the soil environment. The fungus overwinters in the form of dormant sclerotia, which are highly resilient structures that can persist in the soil for several seasons. When environmental conditions become favorable, these sclerotia germinate to produce apothecia, small cup-shaped fruiting bodies that release ascospores to infect new host plants.
Infected plants typically display signs of wilting, premature yellowing, and stunted growth. Upon careful inspection of the root system or rhizomes, gardeners will notice soft, watery decay. As the disease progresses, the decayed tissues often become covered in a fungal mycelium, and black, pepper-like sclerotia develop on the surface of the infected organs, signaling the advanced stage of the disease.

High humidity, heavy soil with poor drainage, and cool spring temperatures provide the perfect backdrop for spore germination and rapid mycelial growth.
