Stropharia is a genus of fungi that, within an agricultural context, can act as a stress factor for various crops, particularly those grown in soil rich in organic matter. While often regarded as saprotrophs, some species can compete with crops for nutrients and moisture, leading to inhibited growth and root health issues in intensive farming systems.

The causal agents belong to the Basidiomycota phylum. They function primarily as saprotrophs but can exhibit opportunistic parasitic characteristics, especially when the plant's immune system is weakened by environmental stress. The fungus develops extensive mycelial networks that colonize the soil substrate, directly impacting the root zone of the target plants.

Crops most frequently affected include berries like strawberries and various greenhouse vegetables. The risk of infestation significantly increases when improper composting techniques are used or when soil is excessively damp, providing an ideal substrate for the fungus to thrive and potentially overtake the growing space of the intended crops.

Symptoms of infestation often include the visible appearance of mushrooms around the plant base, premature wilting, discoloration of the stems, and signs of stunted growth due to nutrient deprivation. In prolonged periods of high humidity, the mycelium spreads rapidly, creating a negative environment that prevents healthy root development and contributes to secondary rot infections.

Effective prevention and control measures involve strictly regulating soil moisture levels and ensuring that all organic amendments, such as manure or compost, are fully matured before application. Regular soil cultivation to break up mycelial mats, improving drainage systems, and applying fungicides when necessary are crucial strategies to mitigate the impact of Stropharia on farm production.
