The blue roundhead (Stropharia caerulea) is frequently misidentified as a plant disease, but it is purely a saprotrophic fungus. It survives by decomposing organic matter rather than infecting living plant tissues, meaning it poses no threat to garden or agricultural crops.
As a biological agent, this fungus functions as a decomposer within the forest and grassland ecosystems. It secretes enzymes that break down complex organic polymers such as lignin and cellulose, which are essential for nutrient cycling in the soil environment.
