Stropharia coronilla, often mistakenly categorized as a plant disease due to its presence in agricultural fields, is actually a saprotrophic fungus. It belongs to the Strophariaceae family and is recognized by its distinct yellowish cap. In an agronomic context, it is crucial to distinguish this fungus from pathogenic organisms that cause crop failure.
As a saprotroph, the fungus acts as a decomposer, feeding on dead and decaying plant matter rather than living tissue. It does not possess the biological machinery to parasitize crops. Therefore, there is no specific disease cycle associated with this species that could negatively affect plant health, vitality, or yield parameters in cereal or vegetable production.
Symptoms of its presence are strictly limited to the appearance of sporocarps (mushrooms) in the field. Unlike true diseases, it produces no necrotic spots, chlorosis, root rot, or wilt. The fungus does not colonize the root systems of crops but rather populates the surrounding soil substrate where organic matter decomposition is active.
The conditions favorable for Stropharia coronilla development include high soil humidity, moderate temperatures, and an abundance of organic debris. It is frequently observed in fields shortly after rainfall or in areas where organic fertilizers have been heavily applied. These conditions promote the mycelial growth necessary for the fungus to complete its life cycle.

Using chemical treatments against a beneficial saprotroph can inadvertently harm the beneficial soil microbiota balance. Standard agricultural practices, such as maintaining proper soil drainage and balanced fertilization, are sufficient to manage the presence of this fungus.
