The pathogen agent is the mycelium of the fungus, which acts through enzymatic degradation of cellulose and lignin. The type of interaction is purely saprotrophic; the organism does not attack healthy, living tree tissues. Instead, it colonizes decaying wood, playing a significant role as a primary decomposer in the forest ecosystem.

The primary hosts for this fungus are coniferous trees, notably spruce and pine, though it can occasionally inhabit deciduous wood in moist environments. It thrives in humid, shaded areas where there is an accumulation of coarse woody debris, stumps, and fallen branches, which provide the necessary substrate for its reproductive cycle.

This includes the removal of old stumps and decaying wood that may serve as reservoirs for wood-rotting fungi. Improving soil drainage and overall site aeration can also help mitigate the conditions that favor the rapid spread of this saprotroph in sensitive areas.
