Stropharia inuncta is a species of fungus in the family Strophariaceae. While primarily recognized as a soil-dwelling saprotroph, its presence in agricultural fields, greenhouses, and home gardens can indicate an imbalance in the soil ecosystem, often impacting the growth of cultivated crops by competing for nutrients and space within the rhizosphere.

The fungus acts as a decomposer, feeding on organic matter, mulch, and decaying plant materials. Its ability to colonize nutrient-rich substrates makes it a frequent inhabitant of heavily manured soils. While it does not directly parasitize living plant tissues, its dense mycelial mats can hinder root development and water uptake, particularly in sensitive young seedlings.

Signs of infestation include the appearance of small, distinct mushrooms with smooth, slimy caps ranging in color from grayish to brownish-purple. Beneath the soil surface, the mycelium forms thick white cords or mats that can disrupt soil aeration. A noticeable odor of decay or earthy fermentation often accompanies large colonies of the fungus.

Development is driven by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and an abundance of raw organic matter. In intensive cultivation systems, such as greenhouse production, the use of improperly composted material is the primary vector for spreading the fungus. Once established, it thrives in environments with limited light and low oxygen circulation within the top layer of the soil.

Effective control measures focus on preventive agronomic practices. To manage the population, gardeners should ensure that all composted material is thoroughly decomposed before application. Improving drainage through the addition of coarse sand or perlite and practicing regular hoeing can disrupt the mycelial network and inhibit the formation of reproductive fruit bodies.

If chemical or biological intervention is required, the use of Trichoderma-based biofungicides can help outcompete the fungus in the soil environment. Additionally, maintaining optimal moisture levels and ensuring good ventilation within greenhouses will significantly reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Proper sanitation, including the manual removal of mushrooms before spores release, remains a critical first step.
